First release. Yay!

The time has come.

We are proud to give you “The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-Chan” chapter 01.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/njnhteza1lq/Haruhi Chan ch 01 [E-S].zip

We would love any comments and criticism.

We currently have no ETA on the next chapter, but we have the raws for the whole volume, and we WILL scanlate it. (Unless another group does it, or legal issues pop up.)

I recommend CDisplay for reading manga, although it’s not designed for yonkomas like this. Remember to set it to Japanese mode. www.geocities.com/davidayton/CDisplay

I don’t know how to update it. I’ve put in a comment, though. Should I send the admins a note? Anyway, we just started releasing today.

Thanks for first comment. +1 internet for you.

    thx a lot.

  4. bubba1652 Says:

after reading it…um…why aren’t there honorifics?
is that how the original is?

    • sirjoeyh Says:

We made the decision not to include honorifics in the translation. However, we’re pretty new at this…. Is it more common to have it included?

  5. remm2004 Says:

    it depeands on the group
also, some comedy manga use honorifics in some jokes

  6. Heirojero Says:

Hey I dont know if it’s just me but the media fire link isn’t working.

  7. phae2y Says:

    thanks for the chapter :D

  8. bubba1652 Says:

yeah it is, but it especially important for haruhi because everyone in the anime/light novel speak to each other in different ways. ex: towards Nagato Yuki, Kyon usually uses Nagato (disregarding honorific), Suzumiya Haruhi uses Yuki or Yuki-chan, Asahina Mikru and Koizumi Itsuki use Nagato-san. this gives infomatio about the characters status and the personality of the speaker… ex: Haruhi is overly familiar to the members of the SOS-dan’s girls in using -chan, whereas Kyon and Koizumi use honorifics for Asahina (Asahina-san) and Koizumi even uses honorifics for Nagato, although Kyon does not (presumably because their relationship is closer, since leaving off the honorific is usually for friends or to be rude towards that person by disregarding their status)

also,if you didn’t know (I doubt it though), try to leave the name order as is (ex: surname then given name). This is also a common practice in scanlations (less so in published English manga…though most online fans prefer the surname first, then the given name, such as Suzumiya Haruhi)

another thing that is much less common (though I personally would hope that it were more common) is no-translations of puns and key terms, which I prefer to be left in their original Japanese (unless it is a word in kakatana that is meant to be an English word that was taken from English ans sound-translated into Japanese, such as Animation, which is アニメーション, or a-ni-me-shu-n). Translating the pun (by which I mean substituting an English equivalent) usually loses the meaning of the pun, so it is best (in my opinion, though many disagree) o have a tl-note for the pun. This has a dual effect of properly explaining the original pun while teaching readers a japanese pun (I like learning Japanese, so…).

for key terms (such as “Data Integration Thought Entity”, Nagato Yuki’s faction in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) it is best to keep them as is (though they should be transliterated into English since they are written in kakatana, I think)

the second to last of my suggestions (on puns) is not very common, as many prefer to kind a substitute, though I find such a measure to be inadequate. this is up to you. but most of what I have said represents much of the scanlation community (please don’t try to find examples to counter what I have said, since there are bound to be a few)

As a new group, I would be happy to help out in editing the script before you guys type set if you want…

just e-mail my at bubba_yu at Yahoo.com, or the other one (the required mail address to post!)

I hope this helps. Good luck guys!

  9. bubba1652 Says:

sorry for the wall of text (I just noticed after I posted)
translations interest me, so I have a lot of opinions on them (I’m taking Japanese in College in hoping to start scanlating on my own…)

again, feel free to ask me far any help you might want…though don’t ask for a cleaner (I suck w/ photoshop…)

  10. bubba1652 Says:

also, looking back at the topic post: there should be no legal issues, as this is a doujin (an epic one, but a doujin nonetheless), meaning that it is fan-made. Unless I’m totally wrong (I hope not though).

anyways, most of the scanlation community is at odds with teh laws…actually, a lot of the internet is…so I wouldn’t worry about it.

also, are you guys also interested in nyoron? (Nyoron Churuya-san has 3+ volumes I think)

I will mail links to you if you want them.

as for haruhi-chan raws, I sent them to you in Sakurahana…check your pm-box, supernerden!

    • sirjoeyh Says:

Thanks alot for feedback and help :) We’ll look into it, and probably implement it in the new releases. Appreciate it :)

    • supernerden Says:

Thanks for your comments. I agree with you on many points, and it would be nice to have someone to have as backup in the translation process. I have doubts in including you in the group, though, as communication is already slow even though me and sirjoey is in the same class. You’ve given us something to think about, however. Thanks again.

I might be wrong, but I believe we included honorifics some places, usually when they weren’t san. Oh, well.

About puns, I think directly translating them, but providing an explanation is the way to go. Have to talk to SJ.

Also, I can tell America woke up. Yesterday we had 17 views, today 177 :)

  11. bubba1652 Says:

really? I’m in NJ, and I saw this earlier…

also, another group did the whole first volume…but the translation is very poor (It looks google-translated…)

so I hope you guys keep on working on it.

    good luck!

  12. BoxAnimeManga Says:

    thanks for release. x3

  13. King Ace Says:

Hehe a very cute anime and as far as scanlating goes you did great. Quality of the pages are better than a lot of fan scans I’ve seen witch really get’s annoying to the point it’s almost un-readable. The translation wasn’t bad either, everything made sense, unlike google translations.

And one last thing… The Game… I lost too >.< DARN IT! xD Very nice job ^^
